Causes And First Aid Of Unconsciousness. Unconsciousness is when a person is unable to respond to people and activities. Doctors often call this a coma or being in a comatose state. Other changes in awareness can occur without becoming unconscious. These are called mental status or changed mental status. They include sudden confusion, disorientation or stupor.





Unconsciousness can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Head injury: A blow to the head that causes damage to the brain can lead to unconsciousness.
  • Seizure: A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain that can cause a person to lose consciousness.
  • Low blood sugar: A sudden drop in blood sugar levels can cause unconsciousness. This is a common problem in people with diabetes.
  • Heart problems: A heart attack or other heart problem can cause a loss of consciousness.
  • Stroke: A stroke is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain that can cause unconsciousness.
  • Drug overdose: Taking too much of a drug, whether prescription or illegal, can cause unconsciousness.
  • Alcohol poisoning: Drinking too much alcohol can lead to unconsciousness.
  • Choking: If a person chokes on something and cannot breathe, they may lose consciousness.
  • Heatstroke: A severe heat illness that can cause the body temperature to rise to dangerous levels can lead to unconsciousness.
  • Cerebral anemia. This is due to alternation of blood supply to the brain resulting in lack of oxygen to nervous system.
  • Tumor of brain.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Asphyxia .
  • Meningitis.
  • Fear.
  • Heat.

First aid for unconsciousness

If you see someone who is unconscious, the first thing you should do is check to see if they are breathing. If they are not breathing, you should start CPR. If they are breathing, you should check their pulse. If they do not have a pulse, you should start CPR.

Once you have ensured that the person is breathing and has a pulse, you should call 911 or your local emergency number. While you are waiting for help to arrive, you should keep the person warm and comfortable. You should also try to keep them from moving around, as this could further injure them.

Additional tips

  • If you think the person has a spinal injury, do not move them unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • If the person vomits, roll them onto their side to prevent them from choking.
  • Do not give the person anything to eat or drink, as this could make their condition worse.
  • Stay with the person until help arrives.

When to seek medical attention

If someone loses consciousness, it is always a good idea to seek medical attention, even if they seem to be okay after they wake up. This is because there may be an underlying medical condition that needs to be treated.

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Loss of vision

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stupor.
  • Lightheadedness

If the person is unconscious from choking, symptoms may include:

  • Inability to speak
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Noisy breathing or high pitched sound while inhaling
  • Weak, ineffective coughing

Bluish skin color


Unconsciousness can be a serious medical condition. If you see someone who is unconscious, it is important to act quickly and call 911 or your local emergency number. By following the first aid steps outlined above, you can help to save a life.
