Procedure Of Shampooing

Procedure Of Shampooing. By shampooing, I mean the act of washing hair with a special preparation called shampoo. Shampoo is typically a viscous liquid that contains surfactants, which are molecules that have both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-hating) ends. The surfactants in shampoo help to break down the sebum (oil) that naturally coats the hair and scalp, and they also help to remove dirt, dust, and other debris from the hair.

Procedure Of Shampooing

Here is the procedure for shampooing a patient in bed:

  1. Gather your supplies. You will need:

    • A shampoo basin
    • A pitcher of warm water
    • A towel
    • A washcloth
    • A comb
    • Shampoo
    • Conditioner (optional)
    • Gloves (optional)
    • Protective pad for the bed (optional)
  2. Assess the patient’s condition. Make sure the patient is comfortable and can tolerate the procedure. If the patient has any open wounds or sores on their scalp, you will need to take extra care to avoid getting shampoo or water in them.

  3. Position the patient. If the patient is able to sit up, have them sit on the edge of the bed. If the patient is unable to sit up, you can position them on their side with their head resting on a pillow.

  4. Place the shampoo basin under the patient’s head. If the patient has long hair, you may need to use a towel to help support the basin.

  5. Fill the pitcher with warm water. Test the temperature of the water on your wrist before pouring it over the patient’s hair.

  6. Apply shampoo to the patient’s hair. Use a small amount of shampoo and work it into a lather. Massage the shampoo into the scalp and hair, making sure to get into all the areas.

  7. Rinse the shampoo out of the patient’s hair. Use the pitcher to pour warm water over the patient’s hair, rinsing away the shampoo.

  8. Apply conditioner (optional). If the patient wants conditioner, apply a small amount to their hair and massage it in. Rinse the conditioner out thoroughly.

  9. Dry the patient’s hair. Use a towel to dry the patient’s hair. You can also use a blow dryer on a low setting, if the patient is comfortable with that.

  10. Comb the patient’s hair. Comb the patient’s hair to remove any tangles.

  11. Make the patient comfortable. Help the patient get back into bed and make sure they are comfortable.

  12. Dispose of the used supplies. Dispose of the used shampoo, conditioner, and water in the appropriate manner.

  13. Wash your hands. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after the procedure.

Here are some additional tips for shampooing a patient in bed:

  • Be gentle. Be gentle when shampooing the patient’s hair, especially if they have any scalp sensitivities.
  • Avoid getting shampoo or water in the patient’s eyes. If shampoo or water gets in the patient’s eyes, rinse them immediately with warm water.
  • Protect the patient’s clothing. If the patient is wearing clothing, you may want to protect it with a towel or sheet.
  • Be patient. It may take longer to shampoo a patient in bed than it would to shampoo a person who is able to stand up.
  • Ask for help. If you are not comfortable shampooing a patient in bed, you can ask for help from a nurse or another healthcare professional.
